Our specialty is finding healthy ways to enjoy classic indulgent treats, especially the crowd pleasers. This vegan French toast recipe is exactly that. Get all of the yummy, slightly sweet goodness in a traditional French toast, but with many more health benefits than your standard breakfast varieties. Our classic blend of grape nectar sugar substitute is the perfect stand in for maple syrup in this recipe, plus we figured wine not add some powerful superfoods to start the day out right. No matter yummy extras you throw on top of this toast, this plant-based recipe is sure to keep you energized all day long.
One of our favorite aspects of this healthier French toast recipe is that it incorporates superfoods that will keep you and your family going all day. One of these superfoods is maca root powder, which is low in calories, and has a great source of vitamins, iron, fiber, calcium, and protein! Maca root powder also can help improve mood and increase energy levels. The hemp hearts in the batter are also incredibly nutritious and packed full of vitamins. And don’t forget the bread! Crusty, local whole grains are what we reach for. So why sweeten your French toast batter with grape nectar in place of maple syrup or agave? All three are natural sugar substitutes, yet grape nectar, which contains grape sugar, offers much much more when it comes to nutrition and taste. We swapped the traditional sugar component in the batter with our Bored-O Blanc blend of natural sweeteners because we found that this blend of our grape sugar based sweeteners enhances the cinnamon and other spices without creating an overpowering flavor. Our original blend of grape nectar, the Bored-O Blanc, adds a bright and sweet flavoring that comes across to enhance the overall taste of the batter. Plus, grape nectar has a lower glycemic index compared to many other natural sweeteners, including agave and maple syrup. This helps keep blood sugar normalized all day and reduces the chance of crashing midday.
Each blend of our grape nectar healthy sugar alternatives also uniquely serves as the perfect topping to this French toast. The Bored-O Blanc blend is excellent if you are looking to match the flavor of the batter with some freshly chopped strawberries. DELICIOUSLY VEGAN FRENCH TOAST RECIPE

Ingredients (enough for 5-slices)
- 1 c unsweetened coconut, oat, or almond milk (each milk will add its own flavor to the recipe)
- 1 Tbsp Bored-O Blanc California Grape Nectar
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- Pinch of cardamom and nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp maca root powder
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 tsp hemp hearts
- Bread of choice
- Avocado oil (we chose avocado for its savoriness, but coconut also works!)
- More grape nectar to top!
Preparation
- In a shallow bowl, mix milk through vanilla together.
- Preheat a griddle or pan to medium heat and grease with 1 Tbsp oil.
- Dip a slice of bread in the batter for approximately 20 seconds on each side (depending on thickness and dryness of the bread - less time for thicker, drier bread, more time for thinner softer bread).
- Place slices of bread on the griddle or pan and cook until golden brown (~3-4 minutes); flip; cook on the other side until golden brown.
- Top with hemp hearts, grape nectar, and any fruit of choice. Enjoy with your loved ones!
